  My Influence

There have been many people who have influenced my life in the direction that it has led me to.
At a very young age, 2 or so, I was given my first fishing rod made of a curtain rod, a piece of string and something that resembled a hook.  Little did I know how having an uncle who worked at a trout farm would land me my first big one, a rainbow trout 4"-6" long.  It was on that homemade rod that I caught the bug for fishing.  Bill Helm, a true outdoorsman, was not only my next door neighbor but a mentor to my Dad and I.  Bill's sheds were covered with fish heads.  I was always in awe on how big those teeth seemed to be on the pike and wondered what it would be like to one day catch something like that.  Bill passed on the love of the outdoors to my Dad who is the fishing hero in my book!  If I remember correctly, the "monster" cat he was holding may have been his first cat fish ever and to me, it was the biggest fish EVER!  And now as I sit back and reflect I realize that there is a strange magic that happens when you are a kid in the outdoors.  And this magic continues as I watch my 3 girls bait their hooks with the dream in their eyes that they are about to land the big one!
And Mom, I can not leave you out.  Thank you for tolerating all the worms in the frig and the dirty little feet!

“I used the Kit #101 here in Kansas on a 5” kick shad.  It did real good here.  In fact I got an 8 ½ lb. bass on it.  I rigged the shad Texas style with the skirt on the weight and pegged it down.  The real shock came when my son-in-law took me fishing in Florida.  We spent 4 days on Lake Okeechobee.  Using this same rig, I caught over 10 bass that hit over 12 lbs. The slow sinking ability did the trick.  Oh yeah, I almost got a gator but I pulled the bait in real fast and missed that hassle.”

A Hell of a Set-Up!

I think I was around 6 or 7 when Dad said we were headed to
K-Mart to do some tackle shopping for a trip to Flat Iron Reservoir tucked away in the foothills of Northern Colorado.  I remember, just the thought of the fishing department was mind boggling.  All the plastic worms, hooks, bobbers, salmon eggs and all of the amazing rods pointing straight up to the lights.  I really remember the marshmallows; I found out that they don’t taste so good.  Later that day after our adventure to K-Mart and $20 well spent, we loaded up the old camper that Dad had bought from our neighbor.  It seemed like a life time to make that short 30 minute trip.  Topping the last hill all you could see was blue clear water lined with rocks and pine trees.  As soon as we had found our spot Dad would set up three lawn chairs.  You know, the kind that when you were a kid, you could easily be swallowed up in.  He would then bring out the “treasure chest” (tackle box).  Little did I know that on this trip Dad was going to let me tie on what ever I wanted for the first and last time!  I decided to ditch the kid eating chair and park it on the rocks.  I was like a kid in a candy store, everything I could imagine was in Dad’s tackle box.  Thinking back now, he let me go threw all of his stuff just to keep me quiet for a while never dreaming that I would use every swivel, weight, bobber and hook.  You name it and I probably tied it on.  About 45 minutes later I was done and ready to make my first cast.  I proudly showed my “bird’s nest” to my Mom and Dad.  With a slight grin and a look of confusion my Dad asked, “What is it?”  Grinning from ear to ear I told him, “It’s a hell of a set up!”  With that said, I took my first step forward and cast.  Yes, it was a great cast.  I could see it headed out over the water like a rocket.  Lots of salmon eggs and a few brightly colored marshmallows is a great way to keep track of your cast flight path.  Suddenly a loud snap was heard all the way around the lake.  Proud of my 150 yard cast, I neglected to notice that $20 of the K-Mart trip had broke off sounding more like a jet skier hitting the water at 40 mph.  I am sure that Dad mumbled a few choice words just under his breath.  Shrugging his shoulders, he asked me for my rod and kindly added one bobber, hook and some salmon eggs.  He stood there shaking his head as I made my next cast.  No one had noticed a guy fishing just down the lake from us.  He had been there the whole time, watching me lose half of Dad’s tackle.  About an hour later he walked over to us and I could see that he was carrying a bird’s nest of tackle that he had snagged.  As he walked over to Dad, he handed him the nest and said, “I think this is yours.”  Dad took the nest and said with a smile, “Now that’s a hell of a set up!”
